The legacy of the diamond is based on slavery, colonialism, genocide and terror, all of which built, and continues to maintain, the western capitalist system. However, diamonds still symbolise beauty and everlasting love for many people and are a highly desired gift for anniversaries – paid for by millions of African people. The film Engaged is a story of two relationships and status symbols that aim to give a physical appearance to romance.
