The word diamond originates from the Greek word adámas, that means “unbreakable. It is one of the best-known and most sought-after gemstones. Diamonds have been known to mankind and used as decorative items since ancient times. The hardness of diamond and its high dispersion of light – giving the diamond its characteristic “fire” – make it useful for industrial applications and desirable as jewelry. Diamonds are such a highly traded commodity that multiple organizations have been created for certifying them based on their color, cut, clarity, and carat.
Gems symbolize the ideals of beauty and everlasting love, diamonds are the desired gift for engagements, anniversaries, graduations, or simply as an expression of love. These myths about the diamond trade, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality the real price of this seemingly innocent stone is payed by millions of African people. The legacy of the diamond is based in slavery, colonialism, genocide and terror that built and maintains the Western capitalist system.
The film Engaged is based on true events. It tells the story of two relationships and status symbols that aim to give a physical appearance to romantic love.
